HIS 300 HISTORIOGRAPHY AND METHODOLOGY
This is a one-semester course which introduces students to the major trends in historical writing, from the ancient world to the modern day. It seeks to introduce students to the “historian’s task” and the various ways scholars/writers have approached it. Thus, this course will engage with works which demonstrate modes of “doing History,” provide theoretical approaches to historical scholarship, and examine how one conducts original archival research. The course emphasizes critical writing and presentation of ideas. Each student will present two of the course readings to the class and write reviews of the material. There is a final paper, due a week after the last class. The paper is done in conjunction with faculty advisor and may be based on a topic from class or one of special interest to the student.
